Explore our core tooling catalog, ranging from ultra-wear-resistant solid carbide rods to high-impact pipe scarfing inserts engineered for heavy industrial throughput.
Analyzing high-frequency electric resistance welded (ERW) and high-frequency induction welded (HFW) longitudinal steel pipe manufacturing challenges.
In high-throughput continuous ERW/HFW pipe mills, longitudinal steel coils pass through progressive breakdown roll passes, fin passes, and high-frequency welding squeeze rolls to forge the open seam. As high-frequency current concentrates at the strip edges via skin effect and proximity effect, the molten metallic edges are forged under extreme mechanical squeeze pressure, expelling an intense external (OD) and internal (ID) molten upset bead. The continuous, uninterrupted removal of this extruded flash—termed weld bead scarfing—is one of the most mechanically and thermally punishing cutting operations across modern metallurgical manufacturing.
If the scarfing insert experiences micro-chipping, notch wear, crater fatigue, or plastic deformation, catastrophic weld seam scarring occurs. This downstream defect results in scrapped line pipe batches failing non-destructive examination (NDE), eddy current, or ultrasonic testing required under stringent international oil and gas benchmarks such as API Spec 5L, API 5CT, ASTM A53, EN 10217, and DIN 2458. Jiangxi Zhongfu Cemented Carbide Co., Ltd. leverages 24 years of powder metallurgy mastery, patented alloy formulations, and advanced Hot Isostatic Pressing (Sinter-HIP) technology to supply industrial pipe producers with inserts that achieve zero-defect surface finishes, extended tool life cycles, and minimal unplanned line stoppages.
Scarfing high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels up to API 5L X80/X100 grades demands ultra-tough sub-micron substrates with specialized CVD Al2O3 multi-layer coatings to withstand abrasive inclusions and heavy dynamic chatter.
Demanding absolute flash planarity for hydroforming, chassis structural tubulars, and shock absorber sleeves, our SPUB and SNMX inserts eliminate micro-burrs and cold-lap weld ridges without tearing thin tube walls.
Engineered for austenitic (304, 316L) and ferritic stainless steel tube mills where severe work hardening and high thermal bonding occur. Custom chipbreaker profiles prevent chip entanglements on high-speed runout tables.
A deep metallurgical breakdown of binder matrices, grain size distributions, and physical properties governing hot shear endurance during flash de-beading.
The operational environment of an external or internal tube scarfing insert differs fundamentally from conventional CNC metal turning. In scarfing, cutting occurs continuously at extremely elevated temperatures ranging from 850°C to 1,150°C right at the squeeze roll exit point. At these temperatures, conventional carbide inserts experience rapid binder leaching, cobalt diffusion, and plastic thermal grooving along the cutting edge. Furthermore, the flash strip carries molten oxides and hardened silicates that generate extreme three-body abrasive wear.
To overcome this, Zhongfu engineers balance sub-micron (0.8–1.2 µm) and medium-grain tungsten carbide (WC) powders bonded with a proprietary Co-Ni-Cr reinforced matrix. Chromium additions (Cr3C2) serve as grain growth inhibitors and inhibit binder phase corrosion, while nickel binder additions significantly improve high-temperature ductility and resist thermal fatigue cracking under intermittent cooling spray quenches.

How Zhongfu eliminates premature failure modes through nanoscale surface engineering and automated five-axis diamond edge hone profiling.
High-temperature Chemical Vapor Deposition producing a 14–18 µm protective shield. The thick alpha-alumina (Al2O3) layer provides a complete chemical barrier against iron diffusion at 1,000°C.
Physical Vapor Deposition applied for lower-temperature operations or thin-gauge mechanical tubing. Provides high surface compressive stress, inhibiting catastrophic micro-cracking across high-speed line stops.
A dead-sharp carbide edge instantly chips under heavy weld flash. We apply robotically controlled radial hone passes (0.035–0.065 mm) to condition the cutting edge, distributing shear stresses evenly across the substrate.
Post-sinter sub-zero tempering transforms retained high-temperature phases into uniform alpha-martensite binder structures, eliminating microscopic residual stresses within the insert core prior to high-speed indexing.
Total vertically integrated control from raw tungsten oxide powder synthesis to finished profile-ground scarfing assemblies.
Situated in Jiangxi Province, China's tungsten heartland, we strictly utilize certified 100% virgin APT-derived tungsten carbide powders. Absolutely zero reclaimed scrap or contaminated regrind powder is introduced into our scarfing insert lines.
Sintering takes place under 60-bar isostatic argon pressure at 1,450°C. This completely closes internal microporosity to A00-B00 levels (ISO 4505 standard), eliminating internal void clusters where micro-cracks propagate under high impact.
Every scarfing insert undergoes automated CNC optical profilometry. Outer contour radius tolerances are verified to within ±0.01 mm, ensuring exact seat contact and preventing chatter inside hydraulic scarfing tool holders.
Serving tube and pipe mills across North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
All Zhongfu tungsten carbide scarfing inserts and blanks conform fully with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and EU REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006). We maintain rigorous documentation verifying that our raw materials originate from conflict-free smelters (RMI compliant). Each production batch is serialized and accompanied by complete mill test certificates (MTC) detailing metallographic grain sizing, density, HRA hardness, TRS, and magnetic saturation properties.
For large-volume pipe mill contracts, Zhongfu provides blanket order management and vendor-managed inventory (VMI) services. We manufacture customized scarfing insert geometries—including custom outside bevels, negative land designs, and specialized radius ground contours (from R12 to R150)—tailored to exact pipe mill outside diameters. OEM private labeling, barcode packaging, and rapid dispatch via DHL/FedEx or consolidated sea freight ensure guaranteed plant uptime.
